Reverse Pass

Arithmetic was my bugbear in my school years.

I could somehow manage addition but not subtraction..."carrying" was easy but not "borrowing"...

When during my university years in Vizagh I went to Maitrani Brothers and bought a shirt-cum-pant combo, the bill came to Rs 82.

When I gave the cashier an awesome 100 rupee note, he quickly counted 1,2,3...18 ten rupee notes and returned them to me.

I wondered how great he was at subtraction; till I discovered that he was actually counting 83,84,85...100. 

He was converting subtraction into addition :)

And if he didn't have enough ten rupee notes he would ask me to hand him an additional two rupee note!

To my wonderment he would then return me a brand new twenty rupee note :)


My HM father who was teaching our science (in addition to English) exhibited once a cute demo: it showed that we don't make our effort to breath in air into our lungs, but only to create a vacuum around our lungs...air flows in automatically!


An exhaust fan is quite the cute obverse of a ceiling fan. 


There was a crazy discussion of room-heating in an obscure edition of Zemansky's Thermodynamics: instead of passing steam or hot air in pipes laid inside the room, the reverse way was to install a refrigerator in the window backside front...trying to cool the outside air :)


Our first physics lesson in college was a demo of Vernier Calipers whose theory was never taught to us. Its vernier divisions were smaller than its main divisions. Much later at KGP, I saw a negative-reading calipers whose vernier divisions were perversely LARGER than its main divisions. That forced me to use my virgin brain to figure out the theory of Vernier Calipers!


There is this hilarious story "Sale" by Guy de Maupassant in which a pig breeder wants money and a wine seller wants a wife.

The pig breeder agrees to sell his wife by volume (like his pigs)...so many francs per liter. He makes his wife fill up his drum with water; and drowns her in it. And releases her. 

And says all he has to do is to measure the volume of the water that flowed away.

Wine seller asks: "How?"

"Just refill the drum again and count the number of pails of water needed!"

That is called the "Displacement Method" in our glorious physics.

Archimedes who ran naked calling "Eureka" was no better...he measured the weight LOST :)


At our student labs in our university we quickly became experts in what we called "back-calculation". 

Suppose we had to measure the wavelength of sodium light using Newtons rings. If we were honest, we would get like 6100 or 5800 instead of the correct 5893.

So we use the formula backwards and calculate the radius of curvature of the lens needed, to cleverly get a passable 6000 (not precisely 5893 :)


Newton did the same with his inverse square law: he measured the time taken by his apple to fall down, inserted the known time period of the moon around the earth, and found that gravity should go inverse square (and not cube ;)


Einstein did the same with his special relativity. 

Lorentz, Fitzgerald, Poincare and other stalwarts too did that back-calculation and got the correct length contraction and time dilation but they were not bold enough, being too old and hidebound.; and were dilly-dallying.

Since young Einstein didn't have any such inhibitions he boldly announced that their back-calculations described Nature precisely.

And he did something similar with his celebrated tensor theory of gravity: he made it VANISH watching a kid diving into water in free-fall.


"Atom Bomb" makers at Los Alamos did something similar: they had to extract a rare isotope of uranium occurring 7 parts in 1000 mixed with its richer isotope.

Instead of extracting the rarer one, they pumped out the unwanted richer one...using diffusion, centrifuges or whatever!


In our Hindu spiritual quest there is a way called "Jnana Marga". 

In this you DON'T search for the ultimate Truth...instead, you discard obvious untruths one by one saying "not this, not this" (neti, neti). 

And what survives is the Truth :)

There is this famous mantra in the oldest Ishopanishad:


హిరణ్మయేన పాత్రేణ 

సత్యస్యాపిహితం ముఖం

తత్ త్వం పూషన్ అపావృణు

సత్య ధర్మాయ ద్రష్టయే 


The face of Truth

Speed of Light

Nothing in the history of science can be more fascinating than the measurement of the speed of light:

As usual it was Galileo in the famous 17th century who first attempted to measure the speed of light.

He made two lamps with shades that can be opened and shut manually. He took one and gave the other to his student whom he asked to stand at the end of the street on a dark night.

You can guess what happened then. 

Galileo reported that the speed of light, as far as he could tell, is infinite.

After a century came Romer, the astronomer. 

The planet Jupiter has many tiny moons with lovely names (discovered among others by Galileo again): 

...Ganymede, Europa, Io, Callisto et al. 

(Supratim, my student in Patel Hall, showed them to me with his hand-held telescope one night in our Qrs C1-97 lawn.)

Romer found irregularities in their orbital periods and made the first approximate measurement of the speed of light (that now stands roughly at: 300,000 km/sec !!!)

That was its first astronomical measurement, followed by Bradley who made it more accurate using stellar aberration (lovely phenomenon).

Then came Fizeau who brought it down to earth. 

His technique was the same as Galileo's: Instead of shades before a lamp, he used a fast-running toothed-wheel. And in place of his student at the street-corner, he placed a mirror on a nearby hill.

It was Foucalt who brought it into a huge room using fast rotating mirrors.

And then it was the Nobel-winning Michelson who brought it right into his dark-room lab.

Fast forward to 1995, IIT KGP, under the stewardship of Professor KL Chopra:

Lakhs of funds were given to the First Year Physics Lab to modernize it.

Tough to spend...how MANY nuts and bolts can be bought with a lakh of great rupees then!

Problem of Plenty!

Word spread that lakhs were available with Prof MLM (our then HoD). 

And then there was this salesman of a reputed German Scientific Company who arrived with his gorgeous glossy manual.

Apparently, an order was placed for a modern imported setup for the measurement of speed of light on a student-optical-bench in broad daylight!!!

When the huge black-box arrived, Prof MLM asked me to open the monster with pujas, mantras, coconuts, and prayers.

I was then the exalted "Guide & Advisor" of the 4th year lab, with Prof SKR as its Lab-in-Charge and Prof BKM as the Expert.

We three carried the Betal into our lab and opened it, read the manual, and installed it on a vacant bench.

Lo and behold! 

Its principle was the same as Fizeau's. 

Lamp was replaced by a laser and the toothed wheel by an electronic chopper chopping the light beam at microwave frequencies. 

The mirror was the same as Ishani's makeup one.

All it required was a dual-beam oscilloscope that was available right in our lab.

The "experiment" was over in 15 minutes giving an accurate measurement of the fantastic speed of light...

All the student had to do was to twiddle a knob to make an ellipse on the oscilloscope screen go over into a straight line.

15 minutes!!!

But what will the student do for the next 2 hour-45 remaining minutes?

From the day I joined the Physics Dept at IIT KGP  to the day I retired forty years later, I was a fixture in our 4th year lab. The reason was simple: "that" lab was an Electronics Lab, and Electronics was my Special Paper in my MSc, and I had hands-on experience in electronics over the two lazy years I spent in Waltair thereafter. So I took to it like a duckling takes to water.

But I was never made its Lab-in-Charge since "that" post was the preserve of experimental researchers while I turned out to be a theoretical researcher. 

No problem...I was always happy...

Then Prof M became HoD. And he didn't know much except that he wanted perhaps to prove that a theoretical physicist is no good at lab. 

So he made me its Lab-in-Charge.

"That" was the opportunity I was waiting for...

Within a semester, with the valuable help of Dr B, I replaced soldering irons with breadboards, single beam oscilloscopes with dual-beam ones, transistors with chips, analog frequency meters with digital ones, old interferometers with new ones, laser diffraction etc etc.

The lab became popular, and Prof M fell in love with me since the credit goes to the HoD who alone represents the Dept in meetings with the Director.

Fine, no problem, since I was already a Professor by virtue of my donkey seniority if nothing else.

Then Prof M  wanted one of my own earlier students Dr S to be promoted as a Professor. 

Dr S was the one who wrote this about me in my late lamented sixtieth year Tribute:

"Sure I will stay and work under him"

"No...no...You are much senior and I will be criticized if I make you work under him. I thought of creating a new position called "Guide & Advisor" for you as a special case. Will that be ok with you?"

"Wonderful! Wonderful!!Wonderful!!!"
