Valmiki (Sanskrit: वाल्मीकि, vālmīki) (during Lord Rama's time)[1] is celebrated as the poet harbinger in Sanskrit literature. He is the author of the epic Ramayana, based on the attribution in the text of the epic itself.[2] He is revered as the Adi Kavi, which means First Poet, for he discovered the first śloka i.e. first verse, which set the base and defined the form to Sanskrit poetry.

At least by the 1st century AD, Valmiki's reputation as the father of Sanskrit classical poetry seems to have been legendary. Ashvagosha writes in the Buddhacarita:
"The voice of Valmiki uttered poetry which the great seer Chyavana could not compose."

Not much more is known of Valmiki except that he wrote a mere 24,000 verses and didn't apply for a Professorship or Awards like the Bhatnagar Prize or Padma Shree. Oh, yes, he was known to be a hunter and that fact is much exploited these days for the good of tribals whose cause is wonderfully espoused by Mahashweta Devi, who gets this Opening Certificate from our own Amit Choudhuri:

"Mahashweta Devi (b. 1926) is now probably the most considerable of living Bengali writers."

Note the hedging adjective "probably" that covers his you know what.

But unstinting praise is anathema to critics who feel greater than their subjects (or is it objects?). So, the blurb ends with this qualifier:

"There is some debate about Mahashweta's prose style; some readers think it lacks the music of the great Bengali writers of the first half of the twentieth century; but it possesses the unexpectedness of a terse piece of journalism that is being transformed into poetry"

Amitbabu! Please say what you think and not hide behind what some readers think.

But I read her piece titled: 'Arjun' at one go...thank you Amitbabu!

Much less is known about Shakespeare. He is 'believed' to be born here:

Some even say that Francis Bacon wrote all of Shakespeare's plays, songs, and sonnets but for some inexplicable reason credited them to Shakespeare...ghost-writing is not confined to our IAS Officers. One entire speech by an Indian Prime Minister uttered at an international forum in Indonesia was found to be 'lifted' from some earlier speech of the  PM of an enemy country a long while ago and the IAS chap got the boot...had it gone well, the PM would have got the laurels...by the way Churchill wrote all his speeches, unless it was his wife...

Anyway, the tongue-wag known as George Bernard Shaw was critical of Shakespeare to the extent of dubbing his universal praise as 'bardolatry'. But Shaw, who said to Gandhi that he also was a Mahatma had the honesty to admit:

"I am taller than Shakespeare...of course, I am standing on his shoulders."

He also said:

"I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it."

My Guide SDM never took the trouble of compiling his resume'. Except once. That was the time he retired from IIT KGP and badly wanted an extension for several reasons including that he never built his own house at Calcutta or anywhere else. He then made me go through all the back-numbers of Physics Abstracts to compile his List of Publications.  It came to a pitiable 45. And he wrote to John Archibald Wheeler, his D Sc Examiner, to write a Reco to the then PM, Indira Gandhi. It was the time of Emergency and all letters to Indirajee passed through her Cabinet Secretary who knew as much Physics as I do Digital Finance. Wheeler wrote back complying with SDM's request and sent a copy to SDM, which he showed me. It was the best Reco I ever saw.

But of course SDM not only got no extension but also no reply from the PM's Office. Prof MSS, in his cute style told me:

"The Cabinet Secretary knows only one Wheeler...the one that sells books at Platform # 2 at the KGP Rly Station."

And like my guide I haven't, till today, ever had to compile my own pitiable List of Publications.

But I had to sum up, once in a while whenever I applied for a promotion, what was then called: Bio-Data.

Later, I heard the word CV and I was told it stood for:

"Curriculum Vitae"

It sounded to me like, Bournvita.

And by the time my son started applying for Summer Training and such trivia, he had to  compile what he called:

"Résumé"

You can't keyboard the hats over the e's. But it is easy otherwise: Google for "Résumé" and you get: 7,500,000 templates in 0.27 seconds.

Choose your pick.

Here is a sample:
