No member should chew betels while speaking in the Vidhan Sabha. This ruling was given by the Speaker, Mr Madan Mohan Verma, in the U.P. Vidhan Sabha today when a Socialist Opposition member, Mr. Kashi Nath Misra raised an objection that the Deputy Home Minister, Mr. Shiv Prasad Gupta, was not audible as he was chewing betels.

A Jana Sangh member, Mr. Sripal Singh, sought to know whether his ruling was applicable to those members who had been advised to take betels on medical grounds.

The Speaker said that his ruling was not against chewing of betels in the House but on speaking while chewing betels - - - PTI
