Obscenity - Not for Prudes

...Central Zone DCP VB Kamalasan Reddy said the police step in only when couples "cross limits".

We do not pick up couples visiting parks. But if anybody creates inconvenience to others by engaging in obscene activities we step in...

Unlike sweet words like love and sex, the very word 'obscene' sounds so very obscene...like 'ugly' sounds real ugly...onomatopoeia...

As is well known obscenity (unlike love and sex) is controversial and culture-specific.

And moral-police-specific.

A youthful couple sitting on a bench under one of the fifty odd bakul trees in the Victoria Memorial and holding hands may look natural to me and you. But, to a moral police intent on lining his pockets with cash or votes, the scene may look obscenely obscene.

There is this mythical story about Picasso:

A lady entered his studio one day and found him giving finishing touches to the painting of a female nude. And rebuked him:

"It is so obscene!"

And Picasso turned round and said:

"No...not at all...but I can make it look obscene with a single touch of my brush"

And he painted on his nude's head an aristocratic hat looking like this:

converting it into something like:

And then there is this story of a student (like me) who is sent up to a counselor for his sex-fixation.

And the lady draws a line on the blackboard and asks him what it looks like. The chap says, 'sex'.

And then a circle, and then an ellipse, and then a parabola, and then a hyperbola...to each of which the adolescent replies, 'sex', 'sex', 'sex', 'sex'...

The lady-counselor gets vexed and asks him:

"Can't you think of anything but sex?"

"Can't you draw anything but sex?"
