Yesterday's post was all about Ambassador cars and how they grabbed the Calcutta roads for 3 decades till Maruti 800 appeared on the scene...like David and Goliath.
My son returned late last night from his office and after dinner he asked me to watch along with him the latest heist film titled 'Special 26' on the widescreen Smart TV he got a couple of days back from Singapore.
I generally avoid watching TV and especially movies other than The Great Train Robbery. But my son insisted, saying that this particular movie recreates a famous unsolved mega-heist that happened in 1987 and that the Director waited all of 3 years for his hero to get dates, and that the film recreates the ambiance of 1987 faithfully.
And so we were watching the movie and there were Calcutta shots circa 1987. Apart from the usual Howrah Bridge, Writers Building and Victoria Memorial, the road scenes that were shot were of immaculately faithful vintage and my son pointed out to me the dozens of Ambassador cars with red beacons on their tops.
And then I told him that I had blogged about the very same Calcutta Ambassador cars a couple of hours back and it was fun to watch them on the HD-LED widescreen (...see the poster of the film above which squeezed in two of the celebrated cars).
And this evening I had an honored guest from IIT KGP who was visiting Hyderabad on official Government work. He was our student in the early 1980s and is now a very senior professor in the Phy Dept there. It was very nice of him to travel from one end of Hyderabad to the other just to see his old teacher...a very touching moment for me.
And as soon as he entered our hall he saw the TV on the wall and said that he had brought the same set for himself from...Singapore...again.
And he said before leaving for the Calcutta airport, he had a look at my latest blog and was happy that it was all about the Ambassador cars...and that recalled to him his own student days in Calcutta during the Reign of Ambassadors.
And, after a couple of hours of feast of reason and flow of soul, I escorted him to see him off at our Main Gate where his official Govt car with its driver were waiting.
And that car was also a rare vintage Ambassador....
Some coincidences there in 24 hours...
