'Gender Bias' LTTE DC

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sir:

This has reference to Antara Dev Sen's article on Page 11 (June 11). Gender bias is apparently not confined to our cow-belt triumvirate Yadavs of India. Let us recall that in 2005 Lawrence Summers was forced to resign as President of the Harvard University for his graceless remarks on the "different availability of aptitude at the high end" (euphemism for 'unsuitablity') of women for higher scientific achievements. In 2009 he is the Director of the White House's National Economic Council for the 'Progressive' President Barrack Obama!

Wills and Shalls

-------------------------------------------------------------------

'Sonoo' is the pet-name of my son of a shotgun.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To Sonoo with Love

(Last Will and Testament of his Daddy)

I am passing through a phase of Wills and Shalls. So, I thought why not make one of my own.

I was born in Love, lived (largely) in Love, and I am sure I will sneak into Love up there. (cf: Taitiriya Upanishad)

Dispose of my body as it suits you best (after my Death).

I don’t much trust rituals…go easy on mumbo-jumbo.

I have discharged my duties to my father and his family to the best of my ability and wisdom (such as it is)....no spill-over there on that count.

I have no assets of my own… all are joint with you / your mom. (“Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing; 'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands; But he that filches from me my good name, Robs me of that which not enriches him, And makes me poor indeed”…Shakespeare in Othello). So no need to register this Will.

I shall watch your career with interest from up there…beware!

Don’t tell lies as far as possible (except to your wife).

Cheers!

'Amusing article' DC LTTE

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Sir:

This has reference to the article of Irfan Hussain on the editorial page of 7th June.

Behind its cloak of fairness and moderation, the entire article reeks of pure panic. The 'war of thousand cuts' is apparently not working and Pakistan is now crying for 'negotiation'. India is clearly in no hurry to pull Pakistan's chestnuts out of a fire they themselves ignited. Sherlock Holmes would have said: "Taliban is a Speckled Band". As far Hussain's Certificate to Musharraf of the Agra Summit as a bold 'out-of-the-box thinker', he should ask what has happened to that visionary statesman now in his own country. Clearly, the cunning jackals have turned into bleating sheep.

'Nehru Remembered' DC LTTE

---------------------------------------------------------------

Sir:

While thanking you for the beautiful editorial page article by Inder Malhotra (27 May), let me add a point not covered there: Nehru was a great scholar, who wrote several books for young Indians: in particular, 'Glimpses of World History' (written entirely in prison). A 1400- page closely printed tome, it may not be acknowledged as a masterpiece by professional historians, but serves as an eminently readable 'Glimpse' to the present generation of Indian children whose curriculum is woefully inadequate in the essentials of history. We are what we are as our history made us.
