Colonal Cancer

***************************************************************************************************************************************

Three years ago Dipak Munshi (from Wales) gifted Roald Dahl's book, The Enormous Crocodile, to little Ishani.

Ishani was then in her nursery class and so we two read it together...me reading and she listening with rapt attention.

Both of us loved it.

Of late I have been in the thick of building up Ishani's Home Library. And I have been ordering books of my boyhood like Treasure Island...and she has been opening the packets...and a wee disappointed that all the books I was buying are beyond her.

Like Treasure Island's famous pun verse:

"Fifteen men on the dead man's chest"

So I asked her to choose one of Roald Dahl's Children's Books among a dozen. She picked up and herself ordered his Marvellous Joke Book and was expecting its arrival with bated breath everyday.

The packet arrived this afternoon and she opened it and kept it aside...she was busy viewing Mr Bean's exploits on her i-pad. And she went out now with her mom.

So I started reading it and found it worse reading for her than Treasure Island. Most of his jokes are British colloquial and equally punny...not funny...I am allergic to puns and rarely indulge in them.

Here is a sample from the book:

Q: Why was the teacher cross-eyed?

A: Because he couldn't control his PUPILS....ha ha ha...

So I thought I would invent one as a revenge. Here it is:

Q: Which is the cancer that army men are most prone to?

A: Colonal Cancer.

Sorry....

Reflected Glory

****************************************************************************************************************************************

There was a time when IIT KGP was the only IIT in the country...now there are dozens.

And then IIT KGP was famous for its teachers. When I joined it as a junior faculty in 1965 I used to hear lots of names of great teachers (as apart from mere good teachers).

Many of our alumni used to express how lucky they were to have been taught by such famous teachers.

The boot is on the other leg now.

This morning I was lounging on the lawn bench and an old man sat beside me and asked me for my introduction (which I don't feel like nowadays).

Anyway, after learning that I retired as a teacher from IIT KGP, he shook my hands and said:

"Oh! My son always speaks high about it"

"Why?"

"He works for Google and says that his ultimate boss, the CEO of his company, was a student of IIT KGP!"

"Not only he. But the CM of Delhi was also our student"

"Oh! How lucky you are!!!!!!!!"

"...a tent symbolic of a Dalit ghetto where Rohit was staying before he committed suicide with four other research scholars who were suspended..."

gps:  Hi! DC CORRESPONDENT!: The four other research scholars who were 'suspended' are, happily, alive...they didn't commit suicide with Rohit...and may sue you for criminal defamation!
