Rolling Stock

In a bizarre incident, a Guwahati-bound passenger train travelled 20 km without the engine on Sunday night from Barmer with more than 400 passengers on board. The 13 coaches of the Guwahati-Barnmer Express finally came to a stop at Gypsum Halt, 20 km from Barmer. An inquiry has been ordered.

Sources said the train started moving after getting a push from an engine that was being shunted. Railway staff watched helplessly and passengers pulled the chain but in vain.

The train with 13 compartments crossed six level crossings at 40 kmph and stopped after more than 18 km. An officer said the train may have been on an incline and received a push, which set it off.
