Fables for Clever Girls - Brahmin's Goat

********************************************************************************************************************************

Last night Ishani came to me for a story.

I began:

Once upon a time there was a very devout and orthodox brahmin. He was very poor and prayed to Goddess Kali. She appeared to him in his dream and told him:

"Buy a goat and submit it to me in my temple and you will become rich"

The brahmin was happy and bought a fat goat with his last rupee and was walking to the Kali temple on the lonely outskirts of his village, hanging his goat on his shoulders.

A gang of four thieves saw the brahmin and wanted to trick him and cheat him and run away with his fat goat.

Ishani asked:

"Why didn't they kill the brahmin and take his goat away?"

"No! They knew that killing a brahmin is sin and they would go to hell'

"Oh, ok!"

So they hatched a plan.

As the brahmin was walking, the first thief crossed his path and told him:

"Sir, you are an orthodox brahmin and you know that touching a dog is sinful but yet you are hanging a fat street dog on your shoulders!"

The brahmin rebuked the first thief:

"Are you blind or insane! Can't you see this is not a dog but a goat?"

The thief walked away and the brahmin resumed his walk...but he had quarter of a doubt if what he was carrying was indeed a dog.

After two minutes, the second thief crossed his path and said:

"Sir, you are an orthodox brahmin and you know that touching a dog is sinful but yet you are hanging a fat street dog on your shoulders!"

The brahmin rebuked the second thief:

"Are you blind or insane! Can't you see this is not a dog but a goat?"

The thief walked away and the brahmin resumed his walk...but he had half a doubt if what he was carrying was indeed a dog.

After two minutes, the third thief crossed his path and said:

"Sir, you are an orthodox brahmin and you know that touching a dog is sinful but yet you are hanging a fat street dog on your shoulders!"

The brahmin rebuked the third thief:

"Are you blind or insane! Can't you see this is not a dog but a goat?"

The thief walked away and the brahmin resumed his walk...but he had three-quarters of a doubt if what he was carrying was indeed a dog.

After two minutes, the fourth thief crossed his path and said:

"Sir, you are an orthodox brahmin and you know that touching a dog is sinful but yet you are hanging a fat street dog on your shoulders!"

The brahmin rebuked the fourth thief:

"Are you blind or insane! Can't you see this is not a dog but a goat?"

The thief walked away and the brahmin resumed his walk...but he had now no doubts that what he was carrying was indeed a dog.

To cleanse himself of the sin of touching a dog, the brahmin then walked to the nearby riverbed and put his goat down to take his purifying bath in the river.

Ishani then said:

"I know how this story goes...as the brahmin puts his goat down and enters the river the four thieves steal his goat and run away!"

No, no, no! The brahmin then had this brilliant idea:

He turns back and pinches his animal to test it.

And was expecting it to bark:

"Bhow! Bhow!! Bhow!!!"

But instead, it bleated:

"Maey! Maey!! Maey!!!"

The brahmin then knew he was about to be tricked, and spotted the four thieves hiding behind a tree and chased them away.

And took his goat to the Kali temple and gifted it to Kali-ma.

And became very very rich.

Ishani then said:

"This brahmin, though orthodox, seems to be very clever!"

"Yes, he did his Ph D in Physics at IIT KGP, see!"
