Dear Sir, a million thanks for this post :)

At times I feel a wee remorseful if I am not being too unkind to the clan as a whole (with honorable exceptions). So, I was buoyed up today to read this in DC (see pic above):

Matchless Sycophancy

"When Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav walked on to the field to play a cricket match against IAS XI, as part of the IAS Service Week, the non-playing IAS officers and their wives put up a brilliant show of sycophancy .

Instead of cheering their own team, the bureaucrats kept cheering the Chief Minister, acutely aware which side of their bread was buttered.

The IAS families began clapping the moment the chief minister picked up the bat. And when he took his position on the field, there was thunderous applause, and when he actually batted like a veteran, the bada babus were on their feet.

When Mr Yadav returned to the pavilion after cracking a half-century, the officers and their wives rushed over to congratulate him. One suggested that he could easily emerge as a star player in Team India while another expended lavish praise on his "technique".

Mr Yadav seemed visibly embarrassed at this sycophancy. He finally asked everyone to proceed for their lunch, but that did not stop the officers from gushing.

Who will blame the guest who wondered aloud if the game had actually been fixed just so that the babus could put on record their loyalty?"

I must admit though that much the same match-fixing used to happen when on the Foundation Day of IIT KGP there was this football match between Teachers and Students. The students ultimately had to score many self-goals just before the game ended.

There is a book by K C Sivaramakrishnan (retired IAS) "The enduring Babu", a hilarious account of the demands of this service. If you get time, do read it. :)
